So I've got to get a different winter beater, as my 2wd 5spd Colorado is just terrible on ice. That and I just don't like it. At all.
It has been a cold winter here in Alaska, and hopefully will be a snowy spring, so winter performence is kind of important.

I've got my eye on two possible replacements, both of which are in a similar price range ($4k ish).

Option 1 is a 2000 Impreza RS coupe w/85k and a wrx tranny
Option 2 is a totally stock FJ80 in good condition with 210k.

Both are on my short list of winter beaters...but both have their advantages and disadvantages.
FJ would be perfect for all kinds of winter recreation, but an expensive DD.
RS will be a fantastic DD and decent recreational car with a roof rack, but not too useful otherwise...

Thoughts, Oppo?

I'm partial to the FJ80, only because I want one. If I didn't have my project in the garage already, there's a nice '97 for under $4k near me.

Yeah I've wanted one for a long time as well. Not too cheap to modify, however, and I'm not sure it would even fit in my current garage...

I'd personally vote for the subaru, having owned a 2000 RS I loved it, but, in that price range, I'd be concerned about its quality, and they tend to get ragged on pretty hard. I do like the FJ, after weighing the options, I'd take the FJ

umm, how good is the heater in the FJ?
